Reflections:

I made the decision to apply to the grant program because it seemed like a natural way to advocate for students with severe disabilities. I was drawn in by the additional courses and the opportunity to interact with others outside of our department. The concept of participating in the program was something that energized and challenged me.

My actual participation in the grant program proved no less exciting and challenging, but I walked away with more than I could have imagined I would. Learning extended beyond the coursework in physical therapy and special education. Working with students and professors outside of our department allowed me to see what we do in speech and language through the eyes of other professionals and families. The strong focus on collaboration changed the way that I look at my role in working with students with disabilities. I walked in as an advocate for students with disabilities and walked out as an advocate for the students, their families, their communicative partners and their service providers.    - Nicole McRight
